Research

I estimate greenhouse gas emissions from the top down, combining atmospheric observations with transport and inverse models to see what is really being emitted and to test national inventories and climate policy.

Current project

ENCORE

Project page

At the University of Galway I work on ENCORE, a project hosted at the Mace Head atmospheric research station on the west coast of Ireland. My focus is nitrous oxide (N2O), a long-lived greenhouse gas and the leading ozone-depleting emission today.

I use atmospheric N2O observations together with transport and inverse modelling to estimate emissions and how they change over time.

Horizon Europe

PARIS: Black carbon (WP7)

In the Horizon Europe project PARIS, I work in Work Package 7 on black carbon, running inversions that estimate black carbon emissions over Europe from atmospheric observations.

I led two of the work package's deliverables, D7.2 and D7.4.

Synthetic greenhouse gases

Top-down emission estimates of HFCs, SF6 and CFCs over Europe, compared with national inventories to test whether the EU F-gas regulation is cutting emissions as intended.

Short-lived climate forcers

Black carbon emissions from Europe and long-term trends in atmospheric propane, built on observations from the WMO-GAW station at Monte Cimone.

Methods

Inverse modelling methods

Bayesian inversion frameworks that turn atmospheric measurements into emission maps, and how sensitive those estimates are to the choices inside the model.
