Synthetic greenhouse gases
Top-down emission estimates of HFCs, SF6 and CFCs over Europe, compared with national inventories to test whether the EU F-gas regulation is cutting emissions as intended.

I use atmospheric observations and inverse modelling to estimate how much greenhouse gas is really being emitted, and to check whether climate policy is working.
About
I am a climate scientist and researcher at the University of Galway, working at the intersection of atmospheric modelling and observations, with a focus on inverse modelling methods.
My current research focuses on estimating greenhouse gas emissions using a top-down (inverse modelling) approach. I study emissions of potent greenhouse gases, both long-lived species (e.g., CFCs, HFCs, N2O) and short-lived species (e.g., black carbon, propane).
I received my Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science from Scuola Superiore Studi Pavia (IUSS), Italy in 2025, and my integrated B.S.–M.S. in Physics from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Mohali, India in 2021.

Atmosphere 2024Approach
Emission estimates should be tested against what the atmosphere actually measures, not only what inventories report.
Methods, uncertainties and code should be transparent enough for others to check and build on.
Independent, top-down numbers help show whether climate regulation is delivering real reductions.
